Receiving feedback

Last lesson in Sonia’s class we studied the Data Protection Act and made a presentation on it. This lesson we displayed the presentation to the class and received feedback from everyone seated there.

This is my experience on receiving feedback, first up my presentation was shown to the class. Personally I believe that my presentation is an 8/10. It had everything in it, including colour, attractiveness and what looked to be the work of a presentation master.

However there were bad features in my presentation mainly the fact that the colour of the font conflicted with the colour of the background. The reason for this error is because when the presentation was being created I was seated right in front of the computer, but the presentation was shown when we were all seated 30 yards back.

That being said I accept the small piece of negative feedback that I have received and actually went ahead and corrected the font colour on my presentation thus making it easier to view when seated further away.

My Website

Today I finally started creating my website. I started using software known as Expression Web 4. But before starting up the software I first had to create a folder where I am going to save my progress. I chose to save my work on my USB flash drive reason being because we only get 50 MB on the school user, and my website will  probably be picture heavy meaning that I had to find a place with more storage to save it so that I don’t run into problems in the future.

Finally when I completed setting up the folders, I loaded up Expression Web and started a new webpage.

The first page I saved it as index.html the reason i chose to name my file as such is because, index is the industry standard name for the homepage and the .html shows that it is a webpage. Without the .html the file would be worthless.

As from there I started my career in knowledge on Expression Web. In the first lesson I learned about creating the webpage, how and where to save it, how to add more pages, how to add interactive buttons/links to navigate among my pages, how to add images and videos and how to preview my page on internet explorer.

However I also experimented myself with adding layers and styling my webpage. I also took the time to study the code that the program added using my extensive knowledge in HTML.

Intro to Photo Shop/Yellow Duck

Today our teacher (Yacob) introduced us to Photoshop. We started by editing a picture of a yellow duck.

The first step was to find a picture of a yellow duck to do this I went to Google images and copied one to my Photoshop document. I then set about using the magic wand tool to get rid of the entire background, the reason I choose this tool is because my background was only one colour and the magic wand tool can get rid of an entire colour at once. Once I completed that i was able to resize my image and move it around.

Next step was to add a background I choose to start my document again so I can base my entire work off the background size instead of re-sizing my background which would result in it becoming a bit pixelated.

So on my first layer I had my background and the second layer I input the yellow duck (now with no background). After this I set about saving my work in multiple different formats to see which one gave me good quality but decent size as well. I eventually settled with a .JPEG extension as this seemed to fit the profile that I needed.

Finally I decided that my phto looked a it bland so I added In some fighter jets flying over and some santas parachuting out. Obviously I edited all the photos and made them look decent to have the ultimate image.

Data protection act

Yesterday our teacher (Sonia Muhammed) organised us into groups of threes and gave us a two tasks to complete.

First task was to gather information and make a presentation on the Data Protection Act 1990.

Second task was to gather information and make a presentation/poster on the Computer misuse act.

I chose to do the data protection act while my team-mates worked on the computer misuse act.

I first visited a few websites to gather information my sources were as follows:

Wikipedia and http://ezinearticles.com/?Implications-Of-The-Data-Protection-Act&id=827805

After i finished gathering information I chose to produce my work in a PowerPoint presentation and so ended another successful lesson.

Learning Photoshop

Today guided by the professional teaching of Mr Yacob we started down the hard path of learning and understanding Photoshop.
We started with the most simple thing yacob could find on the Internet, which so happened to be a yellow duck (like one of those squeaky ones that kids play with in the bath). Anyway we started by copying the image and pasting it into Photoshop, making sure to set the document background as transparent (a fact many of us forgot when we undertook the task by ourselves).
After we pasted it in, we set about experimenting with the different tools Photoshop has to offer to get rid of the white background that came with duck. Eventually we worked out that using the magic wand tool gets rid of the entire white background at once.
Finally to make this task even harder Mr Yacob made us save the picture in multiple formats to see which we deem as the better one to use (obviously we don’t want something too big, but neither do we want the image looking all pixilated).
And finally just to keep us working for an extra half an hour he made us document the entire process with proof (screenshots) of each step of the process.

Unit 208 Task 1 & 2

Today I started unit 208 and completed two of the tasks already.

Task 1 was about ICT definitions. It consisted of eight questions with a few of them having a few parts to each question.

Question 1 was just to define a few ICT terms.

Question 2 was to name four different operating systems, I chose Windows 8, Mac OSx, Linux and android Kitkat.

Question 3 was to describe the features of these different operating systems.

Question 4 was to name four different application software. I chose Microsoft word, adobe photoshop, openoffice and google chrome.

Question 5 was to give features of these four application software.

Question 6 was to explain the difference between permanent and removable storage.

Question 7 was to describe a USB a PCI and the difference between them.

Question 8 was to define a a sound card, graphics card and network card.

Task 2 was to give step by step instructions and screenshots to find out details about different things on the computer.

a – show how to find the different storage capabilities within a PC.

b – show how to see the free space on C drive.

c – show the sound card a computer uses and check if driver is up to date.

d – show the graphics card a PC uses and check if driver is up to date.

e – check what type of processor the computer uses, the speed of the processor and what is the work of the CPU.

f – Check the amount of virtual memory in a computer and what is the work of Virtual Memory.

ICT and Reviews

Today college started at 9am with the lesson going on until 12pm.

We started by discussing working as a team, we discussed the many aspects that make a team successful.

We then discussed the many qualities that contribute to a good ICT professional these include but are not limited to

– Good skills/Knowledge

– Good communication

– Treats others fairly

– Respects others

– Completes tasks on time

– Achieves the goal

– Respects the rules of the workplace

– Ready to help

– Patient

After this we discussed reviews and how emplyees should be handles if they come late or are failing to complete tasks.

We discussed what feedback is and the fact that positive feedback should contain positive language and negative feedback should contain negative language.

Poverty in London

Today in English we learnt about the increasing rise in poverty in London. We started by watching a video which went through in detail about the shocking rise in poverty in what seems to be a prospering country.

Of the 8 million people that live in London we learned that over a quarter of them are in poverty. We also learned that 4 in every 10 children in the capital is in poverty (roughly 650,000). This is a shocking since London is the sixth richest city worldwide.

The Trussel Trust was set up to help these family’s in need and currently have helped start up over 250 food banks across the capital. These food banks are helped run by the local community’s.

Many of the family’s in poverty have complained that the government helps other countries and spends too much on war rather then help their own people. (After all charity should start at home).

The government has invested more into shares and bonds helping to increase the share prices and thus making 10% of London richer which is a good start.

Powerpoint Presentation

Friday 16th January (Sorry for late post)

Today I finally met my Networking and Presentation teacher who happens to be called Ali Sharif. After the introduction (which has been done in every class already) he organised us around the table and started explaining us the details of the course. From what we understood, we worked out that we have to do two units one being about web design (exciting) and the other unit being presentation (mainly powerpoint – boring).

Anyway after a vote (where a few abstained) it was decided that we would start the powerpoint presentation first (no!!!). Anyway to assess our skills he asked us to each make a presentation of our choice using the many different features supplied in powerpoint.

For my task I decided to do a presentation on the greatest football club to exist since before time, (wait for it!!!) Swindon Town! On a serious note the greatest team to ever exist is…… Tottenham Hotspur!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I started the presentation by Googling tottenham hotspur facts and creating a few slides on the various exiting facts (of which there are many), about my glorious club. I then set about inserting the various animations and transitions between slides.

Practicing Job Interviews

Today in English class we got together in groups of four to discuss and act out a job interview. We started off as a two person group but it kept growing as more students found their way to the classroom with queerer excuses the later they came (like seriously who takes the bus in the completely wrong direction and only realises when they reach Uxbridge).

Anyway we first started by discussing the good points that help one achieve success in their interview. The most important point we came up with was ‘Good manners.’ This is important as it shows that you have respect for the other person and it also shows that you are a nice person in general. another important point that we discussed is ‘Dressing smartly.’ The reason for this is because it shows you respect the workplace and that you are work ready

For bad points the most important one I came up with is ‘Disrespectful.’ As this is not only ill-mannered but also very immature and proves that you are not worthy of the position that you are applying for. Another bad point is ‘Not coming to the interview prepared.’ This is not only bad in the prospect of you increasing your chances to land that job, but could also show that you are lazy and could lose you that job offer altogether.

Finally we practiced doing interviews and with me passing extremely well, with a close to a hundred rating. The class went well and I now feel that I have a significant better knowledge in the understanding and participation of interviews.
